Description Northwest gardeners who enjoy Asian gardens will treasure the beautiful umbrella shape that this species forms over time. In the ornamental trade it is sold as Japanese Umbrella Pine or Table Top Pine in recognition of its mature shape.

  Morphology:
Tanyosho Pine is a multi-stemmed evergreen tree which typically grows to a height of 12’ by 20’, though larger specimens can be found on better sites. Needles are arranged in bundles of 2. Over time the branches spread out lending to its characteristic umbrella shape.

The bark on mature trees peels revealing a orange-red color beneath. During the brighter days of winter this feature adds greatly to the appeal of this species.

  Adaptation:
The tree prefers a site with full sun and a well-drained, slightly acid soil. Single trees are used alone as specimens, while multiple trees can be used for screens.

  Pests:
None reported.
