Description There are a number of nice different Japanese Pieris cultivars on the market. Flaming Star is one that was bred in east Asia.

  Morphology:
This is an elegant broadleaf shrub that can grow to 8’ in height and width. The cultivar 'Flaming Star' provides ample year-round ornament with its drooping chains of greenish white flower buds in winter, its white urn-shaped flowers in late winter or early spring, and its cream-edged glossy green leaves that emerge fiery red in spring. The flower clusters resemble those of lily of the valley.

  Adaptation:
Japanese Pieris likes sun to partial sun with a well drained site, and acidic soils. All cultivars of Japanese Pieris prefer partial shade and no formal pruning. It is often grown in the woodland garden.

The foliage of Japanese Pieris is toxic to livestock and probably people as well.

  Pests:
None reported.
