Description As a cross of the red maple cultivars ‘October Glory’ and ‘Autumn Flame’, the variant ‘Brandywine’ was released for its resistance to leaf hoppers. It turns a burgundy color later in the fall than the popular October Glory.

  Morphology:
This is deciduous shade tree that can mature to a height of 45’ and a width of 35’ feet. With time the tree takes on an oval rounded form.

During the summer the leaves are emerald green. In the fall they turn bright red followed by brilliant purple.

This is a seedless cultivar. It was introduced by the National Arboretum.

  Adaptation:
As with other red maple cultivars this one does well on many different types of sites. As such, red maple is well adapted to sites to that are wet.

  Pests:
In the Northwest a fungus known as Taphrina can lead to leaf blisters. While they are unsightly they have no long term affect on the tree.
